Officers need new knowledge for efficient service delivery – NAFDAC

Enugu, July 1, 2018 (NAN) The National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) says it will continue to build the capacity of its regulatory officers with new skills to efficiently carry out the duties of the agency.
Mrs Olajumoke Ojetokun, the South East Zonal Director of NAFDAC, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Sunday.
“To always acquire new knowledge will guarantee quality service, that is why training of staff in this agency is essential, and training and re-training will continue to go on for all our officers especially the regulatory officers of the agency in all the states in the South-East.
“If you do not train your officers, no new knowledge will be acquired, it will be zero in zero out, therefore, there is need for training and re-training,” she said.
The director further explained that the acquisition of new knowledge was a good idea so as to make everyone to come up in his or her responsibility.
She added that with the acquisition of new knowledge which involved training and re-training, the society would be sure of consuming quality products, as it was the responsibility of NAFDAC to ensure the production and consumption of quality products.
Ojotokun said that with the help of the training as often as possible, every regulatory staff will remain useful to the agency.
She added that inculcation of new knowledge on the staff would go a long way to make them carry out the duties of the agency effectively. (NAN)

NGO trains 2,000 youths on vocational skills in Ogun

Ijebu-Ode, (Ogun), June 29, 2018 (NAN) The Necessary Measures Against Poverty, (NEMAPP), an NGO in collaboration with Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area, Ogun has trained 2,000 youths on various vocational skills to make them self-reliant.

The three-week programme, which was organised by NEMAPP and Ijebu-Ode LGA, was concluded on Friday in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the youths were trained in different vocations such as photography, fish farming, fashion design, barbing, interior decoration, catering and beverages production.

Mrs Grace Ajetunmobi, the Director, NEMAPP, advised beneficiaries to use the skills acquired to liberate themselves from poverty.

She said the programme was aimed at giving succour to the less privileged in the state.
“In the society we belong today, learning skills in order to make one self-dependent is of high priority.

“I want you to make use of this opportunity to sustain yourselves and in so doing liberate yourselves from poverty and secure your future.

“The training will continue periodically to ensure that more people benefit from the programme,” she said.

In his remarks, Mr Gbolade Oduwole, the Chairman of the local government, commended the organises for their dedication toward grassroots development.

“Today’s training will go a long way in assisting our youths in actualising their dreams as well as give them hope of a better life for themselves and their families.

“We will continue our drive to ensure that the dividends of democracy are felt by all toward the restoration agenda of the state government and the country at large,” he said.

Oduwole then urged the participants not to relent but to put the experience gained into use, adding that the local government was ready to support the people when necessary.

Also speaking, the Ogun State Commissioner for Community Development and Cooperatives, Mr Gbenga Ademosun said his ministry would assist beneficiaries with access to soft loans and structural support.

“We will try as much as possible to align you with dependable cooperatives that will facilitate your access to credit facilities,” he said. (NAN)

NYSC trains protocol officers on operational efficiency

Abuja June 28, 2018 (NAN) The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) says it is training its protocol officers across the country for the purpose of operational efficiency in the scheme.
Brig-Gen Suleiman Kazaure, the Director-General of the scheme, said this in Abuja on Thursday at the opening of the workshop.
Kazaure said that the training was in furtherance of management commitment to enhance the competence of staff for efficiency.

He said that the peculiar nature of NYSC operations made it necessary for the scheme to stage various events, including the training for protocol officers that would help meet the yearnings of the people.
“Management places premium on standard and excellence in the handling of events as the success and otherwise had implications for the image of the scheme,’’ he said.
Kazaure said that the NYSC play host to important personalities, including high ranking government officials at such events.
He noted that as officers saddled with the task of managing such events, the onus rested on the protocol officers to ensure that the outings conform to acceptable standard.
“During events hosted by the NYSC in recent times and in the course of my tour of orientation camps, I personally observed commendable performance by many of you in many areas,’’ he said.
According to him, the areas include venue arrangement, reception for guest, observation of order of protocol as well as anchoring and ordering of events.
He, however, said that like in other human endeavours, there was need to embrace new ideas in the scheme’s approach to event management so as to be in conformity with global best practices.
Kazaure said that training and re-training of staff for optimal performance and productivity remained the focal areas of his administration.
Earlier, Mr Adetayo Haastrup, Chairman, Nigeria Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Abuja chapter and the guest lecturer, said that protocol was established to take care of certain formalities and courteous mode of behaviour.
He said that there was need to up the performance of protocol officers in the scheme, adding that their duties must be discharged with professionalism, while urging them to imbibe the culture of professional development.
Haastrup said that the trainees must ensure the justification of the resources spent by the NYSC, stressing that the job of protocol officers should not be done under emotion but they should be happy while doing it.
He said that protocol officers must be part of the management, they must be seen to be happy doing the job and they must not be tempted to do anything untoward. (NAN)

Medical tourism: Association demands capacity building for nurses

Minna, June 22, 2018 (NAN) The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has called for capacity building of nurses in the country through training and retraining to discourage medical tourism.
Mrs Ruth Adore, the branch Chairperson of NANNM, General Hospital Minna, Niger State, made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna on Friday.
She said a lot of opportunities abound for nurses to go on local and foreign training but the chances slip off because employers do not sponsor them for such empowerment.
She noted that such opportunities would enhance their skills and update their knowledge on modern medical methodology.
“It is selfish on the part of Niger Government because they have made us miss so many opportunities locally and internationally.
“The only way medical tourism can be minimised is for government to give us training and retraining.
“When they avail us such opportunities, they will be achieving many things at a time; patients will not want to travel out of the state to assess medical care.
“It is unethical, it is crude and unprofessional for us to remain just with the knowledge we acquired while we were in school,” she said.
She added capacity building would help nurses tackle medical healthcare challenges.
Adore also decried the substandard medical apparatus at their disposal, saying it is a huge disregard to quality healthcare delivery.
“The most common apparatus we use like sphygmomanometer for measuring blood pressure most times fails us because what we have as tool is substandard and it slows our daily routine.
“It is our daily routine apparatus but it usually fails us because it is not original.
“We cannot continue like this, in human health you do not gamble or joggle with any tool that is fake because it is tantamount to quackery,” she said.
Adore however appealed to the state government to check for quality while placing order for medical equipment.
“There is need to carry us along while contracting for the purchase of medical equipment.
“We use them and our input will go a long way in achieving the very best for us and the state,” she said.
While appealing to Gov. Sani Bello to give the association the opportunity to see him on varied issues, Adore said that would help them and the state in addressing challenges of the sector.
“He needs to know the problem that is bedevilling us and the health system as whole.
“Managing medical resources or using substandard equipment will swindle us medically and economically, the consequence is grave because we will fail in rendering quality health services,” she said. (NAN)

National Hospital trains medical experts in IVF services

Abuja, June 21, 2018 (NAN) The National Hospital, Abuja, says it has commenced the training of medical personnel from across the country in In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) services at its IVF Centre.
Dr Rais Ibraheem, the Coordinator of the centre, made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja.
He spoke on the sideline event to mark 13 years anniversary of IVF centre at the hospital.
He said the centre, which had focused on sustainability and provision of IVF services at an affordable rate to Nigerians in 13 years, had achieved great success since its inception.
Ibraheem said moving forward, the centre would become a national training centre for the country which would engage in training experts such as doctors, nurses and scientists in IVF services.
He said the vision was aimed at training home grown experts that would be adequately trained to provide IVF service to Nigerians and the West African sub-region.
“There are a lot of collaboration going on presently especially with the training institutions in Nigeria and the West African sub-region.
“We have commenced training with the West Africa College of Surgeons, the National Medical Post Graduate College and many others that we are yet to engage.
“Training experts from other states means IVF services will be available, accessible and more affordable to any couple that desires to have their children without having to travel outside the country,’’ the coordinator said.
Also speaking, Dr Ibrahim Wada, Consultant Gyneacologist, and Pioneer of IVF National Hospital, said no fewer than 100,000 people were in need of IVF services in the country.
He added that there would indeed be an increase in future, hence the need for the National Hospital to train experts from all over the country that would help childless families.
Wada said there was need for the hospital to advance the programme to the next level through training and breaking through the levels of technological science.
“IVF is a cutting edge scientific technology management of infertility that open doors to other aspects of health diagnosis.
“Parental diagnosis of sickle cell diseases, genetic abnormalities, gender diagnosis, among others, can be treated early through scientific knowledge.
“Also embryo testing and selection can be done at the centre, so that women at risk of sickle cell babies can be helped and also have the desired genotype for their babies.
“This will go a long way to wipe away tears from childless mothers in our country,’’ Wada said. (NAN)

Abuja, June 4, 2018 (NAN) Youth Initiative for Sustainable Human Development in Africa (YiSHDA) says it has trained no fewer than 200 students on environmental education in the FCT.
Mr Moses Agbara, Director of Communication, YiSHDA, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abuja.
According to Agbara, the training was conducted in collaboration with Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB).
“These are part of the activities to commemorate 2018 World Environmental Day scheduled for June 5,’’ he said.
Agbara said 200 students and 10 teachers who were selected from 10 schools across the six area councils of the FCT benefited from the School Environmental Programme (SEP).
He listed some of the participating schools to include Government Girls Secondary School Abaji, Model Secondary School, Maitama, and Government Secondary School Kubwa, among others.
Agbara said the School Environmental Programme (SEP) was a comprehensive environmental education programme developed by the foundation to create a platform for environmental awareness among young people.
The objective of the programme, he said, was to strengthen the capacity of 200 young people to solve environmental challenges and to promote understanding of environment and economic development.
He said environmental education was extremely important, in ensuring that new generations understood the importance and significance of the environment and how to protect it.
Agbara said pollution and industrial gases amongst other things interfered with environmental well-being on a regular basis hence the need to ensure proactive steps were taken to care for the environment.
He added that providing proper knowledge to future generations would help to flourish the environment as the survival of the world depended on it.
“Environmental education provides important opportunities for students to become engaged in real world issues that transcend classroom walls.
“They can see the relevance of their classroom studies to the complex environmental issues confronting our planet and they will acquire skills needed to be creative problem solvers and powerful advocates.
“The programme will give young people the opportunity to make real difference to their own quality of life, their local community as well as contributing to the future well-being of the planet,’’ he added.
Agbara said that, meeting the needs of global citizenry both ecologically, economically, culturally required understanding and creative problem solving.
He said the pursuit of sustainable development and environmental conservation policies, objectives and targets required the public to be sufficiently sensitised to the multiple dimensions of environment and development.
In commemoration of the 2018 World Environmental Day, Agbara said the foundation in partnership with AEPB would organise,`Young Environmental Exhibition and Awards’ for best participating schools on seeking environmental problems and solution. (NAN)

NGO trains religious leaders on HIV response

Akwanga (Nasarawa State), May 31, 2018 (NAN) Caritas Nigeria/Caritas International, an NGO, has commenced the training of over 56 religious leaders and critical stakeholders on active response to HIV among children and reducing stigma in the country.
Dr Uche Obodoechina, the Deputy Executive Secretary, Caritas Nigeria, made this known on Thursday in Akwanga, Nasarawa State, at the opening of a two-day training on Paediatric HIV for religious leaders.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that participants of the workshop were Catholic priests, Reverend Sisters and other critical stakeholders drawn from Kaduna, Nasarawa and Benue States as well as FCT, Abuja.
Obodoechina said that the training is part of a project called Galvanising Religious Leaders for Accelerated Identification and Linkage to paediatric ART (GRAIL).
He explained that the training was aimed at empowering religious leaders’ response to HIV among children and further reducing stigma.
He noted that the choice of the religious leaders and other critical stakeholders for the workshop was based on their critical role and position in the society.
“We are looking forward to over 56 religious leaders and critical stakeholders who are going to help us carry the campaign forward for inclusion of infant and children in our HIV response.
“Because experience shows that infant and children are always forgotten in the entire response process.
“This programme, the GRAIL project, is designed to encourage and help our leaders to take active part in the campaign because infants are unable to speak for themselves,’’ he said.
The deputy executive scribe called on Nigerians to avoid reckless and irresponsible life in the interest of their health and for the overall development of the country.
Mr Stefano Nobile, the Focal Person for Health and HIV, Caritas International, urged the participants to actively take the message to their communities in order to tackle the menace in the society.
“Caritas has organised training of its own staff and volunteers, as well as those engaged in other Catholic Church structures to develop compassionate, non-judgmental responses to those living with or affected by HIV,” he said.
Also speaking, Dr Olawale Fadare, Senior Technical Advisor, Outcomes and Evaluation, Caritas Nigeria, said the objective of the training was to ensure that religious and community leaders are empowered with pastoral and scientific messaging upon return to their congregations.
He said it is also to engage the participants in reviewing and domesticating the pre-existing sermon guides from World Council of Churches (WCC) and the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA).
Mr Gabriel Undelikwo, the Country Community Mobilisation and Networking Adviser, UNAIDS, called on the people to always know their HIV status in the interest of their health to enable them live a worthy life.
He advised against discrimination of people living with HIV/AIDS, adding that people should show love and care to the victims of the scourge in order to improve on their health status.
“My wish is for people to get tested, let encourage each other, let ensure that collectively ,we end HIV/ AIDs,” he said.
In a short spiritual reflection, the Catholic Bishop of Lafia Diocese, Dr Mathew Audu, called for maximum protection to venerable children and defenceless people in the society.
Audu, who was represented by the Catholic Priest in charge of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Akwanga, Rev. Peter Semenlinso, commended Caritas Nigeria for organising the workshop.
The priest also acknowledged that the strategy would go a long way in tackling the menace of HIV/AIDS in the society. (NAN)

Ministry trains 18 master trainers in CLTS to end open defecation – Official

Abuja, May 30, 2018 (NAN) The Federal Ministry of Water Resources has commenced the training of 18 persons to train young persons in Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) so as to end open defecation in the country.

 

Mrs Chizoba Opara, a Scientific Officer in the ministry, made this known at a meeting of the National Task Group on Sanitation (NTGS) in Abuja on Wednesday.

 

She said that the training became necessary following the dearth of trainers that would facilitate the training of people in efforts to scale up sanitation and hygiene in the country.

 

She said that only eight trainers in CLTS were currently available in Nigeria, adding that this had somewhat affected the progress so far recorded in the campaign against open defecation in the country.

 

Opara said that with the availability of more trainers, the goal of stepping down lessons learnt in the campaign to others would be achieved.

 

Besides, Mrs Ayaba Kogbara, an official of the Federal Ministry of Water Resources, gave a report on activities of the NTGS in the hand washing campaign.

 

She said that the ministry and other stakeholders had been to train 100 schools and 30 primary health care centres in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in hand washing.

 

She said that the training was necessary in order to encourage and educate the citizens, particularly the youth, on the need to wash their hands at critical times.

 

Kogbara stressed that the importance of hand washing at critical times could not be over-emphasised, as it had the tendency to break faecal-oral transmission of diseases, especially among young persons.

 

She, however, said the group was carrying out the monitoring of schools to see how the students embraced the hand washing culture, which was promoted in the campaign.

 

Mr Emmanuel Eze, Deputy Director, Sanitation, Federal Ministry of Water Resources, gave an update on the National Open Defecation Free campaign in the country.

 

He said that the Federal Government was launching a Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Fund to accomplish the goals of the campaign.

 

He said that the fund would cater for the needs of all tiers of government in efforts to scale up the WASH campaign across the country.

 

Eze said that state governments would be encouraged to play specific roles in the campaign.

 

Also speaking, the UNICEF representative, Mr Sakiru Otusanya, stressed the need for all State Task Groups on Sanitation to be functional and alive to their responsibilities in meeting the WASH needs of their communities.

 

He, however, said that it was important for the WASH units in all parts of the country to be transformed into full-fledged departments to enable them to have a budget line and function effectively. (NAN)

Yola, April 23, 2018 (NAN) More than 300 traditional rulers, comprising District, Village and Ward Heads, have been trained on conflict resolution in Adamawa.
The State Team Leader, Managing Conflicts in Nigeria (MCN), Mr Abdulkadir Bello, made this known on Monday Yola.
Bello spoke at a capacity building programme on conflicts resolution for traditional rulers and community leaders in Adamawa and Mubi Emirate Councils.
He said the programme organised by Green Horizon, was funded by European Union (EU) and managed by the British Council.
Bello said the traditional rulers were trained on traditional justice system in areas of mediation skills to handle conflicts such as land disputes, destruction of farm produce by cattle and inheritance, among others.
The Technical Leader of MCN, Dr Ukoha Ukiwo, explained that the training was designed to strengthen community level conflict management mechanism, and enhance reconciliation and stability within communities affected by displacement, among other objectives.
Speaking on behalf of Adamawa and Mubi emirate councils, the Dan Galadima of Adamawa, Alhaji Lawal Ribadu, and the Madaki of Mubi, Alhaji Abubakar Wambai, lauded the programme and re-iterated the commitment of the traditional institution to ensure the programme succeeded in addressing conflicts in their respective domains.
Giving a breakdown of success so far recorded by the programme in the two benefitting emirates, Prof. Aminu Gurin of ABU Zaria, said 457 disputes between January and March, this year
According to him, the disputes comprised 213 from Adamawa emirate council and 244 from Mubi emirate council.
He urged other traditional institutions to key into the programme to achieve sustainable peace and development in the country. (NAN)

Abuja, April 20, 2018 (NAN) The International Institute on Ageing, United Nations -Malta (INIA), on Friday commended Dave Omokaro Foundation (DOF) for its high level of capacity building for drivers of the ageing policy in Nigeria.
This is contained in a letter signed by the Director of the institute, Prof. Marvin Formosa, a copy of which was made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.
It appreciated the foundation for its organisational capability for the training programme on Ageing Policy Formulation.
Formosa said that the institute was proud to have a “trustworthy, knowledgeable and hard working person as Dave Omokaro’’.
NAN recalls that the foundation had organised training on Ageing Policy Formulation for stakeholders between March 5 and 9.
The director underscored the need for collaboration in order to meet the challenges of a rapidly ageing population, and to respond positively to the objectives and recommendations of the Madrid International Plan Action on Ageing.
“The training programme on ageing policy formulation deserves commendation for excellent organisational skills, efficiency and on site experience exhibited,” he said.
He noted the excellent success in the training programme due to the innovative methodology Omokaro adopted.
The director specifically acknowledged the policy practice forum she introduced in order to encourage relevant and strategic Government, Ministries and Civil Society to mainstream ageing in their sector policies.
Formosa also lauded the nine resolutions reached by the participants at the end of five days of intensive activities including lectures, site visits and interactive forum.
According to him, the outcome highlighted the huge tasks that were ahead in achieving the desired standards for the well-being of older persons.
He, however, pledged that under his directive INIA would seek to enhance its collaboration with DOF and meet its recommendations in the most effective way.
Formosa, therefore, congratulated Omokaro for the successful conduct of 2018 training programme and also expressed his appreciation of the collaboration between both organisations. (NAN)
