NCAA alerts airline operators on weather hazard

Lagos, Nov. 12, 2017 (NAN) The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has issued a weather alert to all airline operators indicating hazards associated with Harmattan dust haze in flight operations at this period of the year.

A statement by the NCAA General Manager, Public Relations, Mr Sam Adurogboye, on Sunday said the alert was important as Harmattan was a threat to aircraft particularly in areas of challenging terrains due to low visibility.

Adurogboye said according to the Seasonal Rainfall Prediction issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, the prevailing weather condition is likely to herald a long and severe dust haze in the months ahead.

He said:”The Advisory circular AC: NCAA- AEROMET-24 is intended to alert pilots of the hazards associated with dust haze which is a dry and dusty wind that blows southwards from the Sahara across Nigeria during the months of November to March.

“The effect of the dust and sand stirred by the wind is known as Harmattan Dust Haze.

“Therefore, pilots should note that air-to-ground visibility may be considerably reduced due to the dust haze.

“In addition, aerodrome visibility might fall below the prescribed minima and in severe conditions dust haze can blot out runways, the markers and airfield lightings over wide areas.”

According to him, this makes visual navigation extremely difficult or impossible.

“Resultantly, where visibility falls below the prescribed weather minima, flight operations are expected to be delayed, diverted or outrightly cancelled.

“Hence, all pilots are obliged to exercise maximum restraint especially when severe weather condition is observed or reported by NIMET,” he said.

The NCAA spokesperson advised pilots to obtain adequate departure, en route and destination weather information and briefing from NIMET prior to flight operations at all the airports.

He also urged Flight Crews/ Operators and Air Traffic Controllers (ATC) to ensure adherence to aerodrome operating minima.

“Operators are therefore advised to ensure necessary measures are put in place to manage the effects of flight delays or cancellations on their passengers.

“All stakeholders are required to ensure strict compliance with this circular,” Adurogboye said. (NAN)

Abuja, Nov. 11, 2017 (NAN) The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted sunny and hazy weather conditions over the Central States of the Country on Sunday.

NiMet Weather Outlook by its Central Forecast Office (CFO) on Saturday in Abuja, also predicted day and night temperatures in the range of 29 to 38 and 14 to 23 degrees Celsius respectively.

The agency predicted that the Southern states would experience partly cloudy conditions over some inland cities during the forecast period with cloudy conditions over the coastal cities during the morning hours.

It also predicted isolated thunderstorms over Eket, Calabar, Yenagoa and port-Harcourt during the afternoon and evening hours with day and night temperatures ranging from 29 to 35 and 20 to 26 degrees Celsius respectively.

According to NiMet, Northern states will experience sunny and hazy conditions during the forecast period with day and night temperatures in the range of 33 to 38 and 15 to 23 degrees Celsius respectively.

“Sunny and Hazy conditions are anticipated over the entire northern cities down to the central with prospects of localised thunderstorms over some parts of the coastal cities within the next 24 hours,” NiMet predicted. (NAN)

Abuja, Nov. 4, 2017 (NAN) The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted sunny and hazy weather conditions over the Central States of the country on Sunday with partly cloudy morning over southern half of the region.

NiMet’s Weather Outlook by its Central Forecast Office (CFO) on Saturday also predicted chances of localised thunderstorms over Lokoja, Makurdi and Jalingo axis during the evening hours.

It added that the region would experience day and night time temperatures of 33 to 37 and 21 to 24 degrees Celsius respectively.

The agency predicted that the Southern States would experience cloudy to partly cloudy morning with isolated thunderstorms over Eket, Calabar, Uyo and Ikom.

It also predicted prospects of localised thunderstorms over the inland cities of Akure, Oshogbo, Ado-Ekiti, Enugu, Awka and Owerri as well as the coastal cities during the afternoon and evening hours.

NiMet further predicted that the region would experience day and night temperatures of 30 to 34 and 20 to 25 degrees Celsius respectively.

According to NiMet, northern states will experience dust haze with visibility values of two to five kilometers and poor visibility of less than or equal to 1000m over Katsina, Maiduguri and Nguru.

It said “the region will also experience day and night time temperatures in the range of 34 to 38 and 16 to 21 degrees Celsius respectively.

“Poor horizontal visibilities values are expected to persist over the north due to dust haze, some part of the central cities are expected to be hazy.

“However, the remaining half down to the coast will experience partly cloudy to cloudy conditions with chances of localized thunderstorms in few cities in the next 24 hours,’’ NiMet predicted. (NAN)

Abuja, May 12, 2017 (NAN) The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted localised thunderstorms over the central states of the country on Saturday morning.

NiMet’s Weather Outlook by its Central Forecast Office (CFO), on Friday in Abuja predicted prospect of localised thunderstorms over cities such as Abuja, Jos, Makurdi and Lafia axis during the afternoon and evening hours.

It added that the central states would have day and night temperatures of 30 to 35 and 18 to 25 degrees Celsius, respectively.

The agency predicted that southern states would experience cloudy condition with chances of isolated thunderstorms over Badagry, Eket and Onne in the morning.

It also predicted localised thunderstorms over inland of Abeokuta, Lagos, Ijebu-ode, Enugu, Port Harcourt, Calabar and Obudu-Ikom during the evening and night period.

NiMet added that the southern states would have day and night temperatures of 31 to 34 and 22 to 24 degrees Celsius, respectively.

According to NiMet, Northern States will experience isolated thunderstorms over Gusau, Kebbi and Yelwa in the morning and over southern Borno, Potiskum, Yola and Gombe in the afternoon and evening period.

“The region will have day and night températures of 36 to 41 and 24 to 28 degrees Celsius, respectively.

“There are prospects of weather activities due to atmospheric instability; this is expected to aid cloud build up, thunderstorms with rains over some selected cities across the country in the next 24 hours,” NiMet predicted. (NAN) OYS/MST

Abuja, March, 28, 2017 (NAN) The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted partly cloudy weather conditions over the central states of the country on Wednesday.

NiMet gave the prediction in the Weather Outlook by its Central Forecast Office (CFO) on Tuesday in Abuja.

It added that the region would have day and night temperature of 34 to 41 and 17 to 28 degrees Celsius, respectively.

The agency predicted that southern states would experience over the inland and coastal cities in the morning hours with day and night temperature of 32 to 39 and 22 to 26 degrees Celsius, respectively.

It also predicted isolated thundery activities over Akure, Ado-Ekiti and Abeokuta with isolated thunderstorms over Calabar, Eket, Port-Harcourt, Yenagoa and Warri axis later in the day.

According to NiMet, northern states will experience sunny and dry conditions with day and night temperature of 39 to 42 and 18 to 25 degrees Celsius, respectively.

“Sunny and dry conditions with high temperature values are likely over most parts of the country,” NiMet said. (NAN)

Abuja, Feb. 13, 2017 (NAN) The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted slight dust haze conditions over the central States of the country on Tuesday.

NiMet gave the prediction in its Weather Outlook by the Central Forecast Office on Monday in Abuja.

It also predicted that the region would have day and night temperature of 36 to 39 degrees Celsius and 19 to 23 degrees Celsius, respectively. The agency predicted southern states would experience partly cloudy conditions over southwest inland and hazy conditions to the southeast inland with early morning mist/fog patches over southwest coast.

It also predicted chances of isolated rains over Lagos, Ijebu Ode and Benin in the afternoon and evening period with day and night temperatures of 36 to 38 and 23 to 27 degrees Celsius, respectively.

According to NiMet, northern states will experience dust haze conditions with reduced horizontal visibility range between two to five kilometres around the northeast in the next 24 hours.

“Northern states will also have day and night temperature values in the range of 31 to 36 and 13 to 21 degrees Celsius, respectively.

“Dust haze situation is expected in the Northern cities with horizontal visibility of two to five kilometers around north eastern cities while central cities are expected to be in dust haze,” NiMet predicted. (NAN)

NiMet made the prediction in the Weather Outlook by its Central Forecast Office in Abuja on Monday.

It added that the region would have day and night temperature of 29 to 36 degrees Celsius and 15 to 20 degrees Celsius, respectively.

The agency predicted that the Southern states would experience sunny and hazy conditions over the inland of the southwest and southeast with day and night temperatures of 33 to 35 degrees Celsius and 16 to 24 degrees Celsius, respectively.

It also predicted early morning mist and fog patches over the coastal cities with partly cloudy conditions later in the afternoon and evening hours.

According to NiMet, northern states will be experience dust haze with horizontal visibility of two to five kilometres and day and night temperature of 28 to 31 degrees Celsius and 9 to 18 degrees Celsius, respectively.

“Nguru, Maiduguri, Damaturu, Potiskum and Yola may witness isolated visibility of less than or equal to 1000m in the next 24 hours.

“Dust haze conditions are expected over the northern cities of the country, while some places may likely witness localised visibility values of less than or equal to 1000m in the next 24 hours,” NiMet predicted. (NAN)

Abuja, Jan. 4, 2017 (NAN) The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted reduced visibility of less than 1000m over the central States such as Abuja, Minna, Kaduna, Lafia, Jos, Makurdi, Lokoja and Bida on Thursday.

NiMet made the prediction in the Weather Outlook by its Central Forecast Office in Abuja on Wednesday.

It added that the region would have day and night temperature of 28 to 36 degrees Celsius and 10 to 19 degrees Celsius, respectively.

The agency predicted that the Southern states would experience dust haze with visibility values less than 2000m over Benin, Asaba, Ibadan, Lagos, Owerri, Enugu and Akure.

It also predicted that the region would have day and night temperatures of 34 to 35 degrees and 16 to 23 degrees Celsius, respectively.

According to NiMet, northern states will experience thick dust haze with visibilities less than 1000m over Katsina, Maiduguri, Kano, Gusau, Nguru and Bauchi during the forecast period.

“The region will have day and night temperatures of 30 to 34 degrees Celsius and 11 to 19 degrees Celsius, respectively.

“Fresh dust has been raised from the Source region this is expected to deteriorate visibilities across the country especially over the North eastern parts,” NiMet predicted. (NAN)
