Yobe Assembly to screen 20 commissioner nominees

Damaturu, Nov. 5, 2019 (NAN) The Yobe House of Assembly on Tuesday confirmed receipt of 20 nominees submitted by Gov. Mai Mala Buni for screening and confirmation as commissioners and members of the state executive council.
The Assembly, which was presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Alhaji Mohammed Bello, said the list was contained in a letter signed by Baba Mallam Wali, the acting Secretary to the State Government, addressed to the Speaker.
He said a commissioner was nominated from each of the 17 local government areas with three additional others from the three political zones of the state, making a total of 20 nominees.
Similarly, the governor sought the approval of the legislature for the appointment of 20 Special Advisers.
Meanwhile, the Assembly has fixed the commencement of screening of the nominees for Wednesday with former Sen. Alkali Jajere and four ex-members of House of Representatives.
The former lawmakers are Abdullahi Kukuwa, Goni Bukar, Yerima Lawan and Sidi Karasuwa.
Others slated for screening on Thursday include Messrs Garba Iliya, Mohammed Lamin, Musa Mustapha, Mala Musty and Bukar Dauda.
The screening will continue on Nov. 12 with Mohammed Gagiyo, Mohammed Lawan-Gana, Barma Shettima, Abdullahi Bego and Mohammed Idris.
The last batch of Dr Mairo Amshi, Umaru Wakili, Hajiya Hauwa Bah, Saleh Samanja and Prof. Mohammed Munkaila will hold on Nov. 13. (NAN)

Automatic employment of midwives excites Yobe residents

Damaturu, Sept. 20, 2019 (NAN) The automatic employment of 37 graduating students of the Yobe College of Nursing and Midwifery by the State Government has excited residents.
The residents told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in separate interviews on Friday in Damaturu that the measure would boost manpower to combat maternal and infant mortality in the state.
They commended Gov. Mai Mala Buni for concentrating on people oriented programmes and projects, most especially healthcare delivery.
Alhaji Aliyu Ibrahim, a parent to one of the beneficiaries, said “the health sector is a key area in dire need of manpower and this employment would improve the manpower.
“Yobe is lucky to have a pragmatic governor whose attention lies with the interests of the people as we have seen in the last 100 days of Gov. Buni’s administration”.
Malam Mustapha Kime, a civil servant, said lack of employment has been a very disturbing issue in Nigeria.
“Gov. Buni deserves commendation for employing the graduates.
“The administration’s commitments in education, healthcare and agriculture are gradually moving the state away from the bottom of the development ladder,” he said.
Another resident, Mr Hassan Damaturu said “it is a welcome development but they should be posted to the remote areas to assist pregnant women in labour to serve and justify the employment”.
He cautioned against over concentration of medical workers in the cities while the demand for their service was higher in the rural areas.
On her part, Malama Hadiza Musa, one of the graduates, commended the governor for the employment and promised to justify the confidence reposed in her.
“We (the beneficiaries) must justify this goodwill by Gov. Mai Mala who offered us automatic employment without going into the labour market to search for employment,” Hadiza said.
Ms Nana Musa, a sister to the graduate, said “the joy of our family and others knew no bounds as we now have one of us employed to support her siblings and parents’’. (NAN)

Yobe Govt saves N5b from contract vetting

Damaturu, Sept. 12, 2019 (NAN) The Yobe Government says it has saved over N5 billion in the last two years from contract vetting by the state Bureau for Public Procurement.
Alhaji Samaila Mai-Adamu, the Director-General of the bureau, disclosed this at the opening of a two-day workshop on procurement tools organised for state officials on Thursday in Damaturu.
According to him, the establishment of the bureau in 2016 had saved the state the sum of over N5 billion through vetting of contracts and curtailing over invoicing.
The director-general said the workshop would strengthen the capacity of officials on compliance with due process in government expenditure and to get value for money.
He said efforts are underway to establish procurement cadre in the state civil service to promote best standard practice.
Gov. Mai Mala Buni said his administration was committed to the “principles of probity, accountability and transparency in government spending’’.
“This workshop will instil proper understanding of the procurement principles, processes and procedures as well as award of contracts and their execution,” he said.
The governor, who was represented by his deputy, Alhaji Idi Barde, said the training would improve the capacity of officers to check “unnecessary expenditure and spending’’.
“This noble initiative of the Bureau, no doubt will address the problems associated with poor quality of contract execution, over invoicing, diversion of funds, misappropriation and revenue leakages,” he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the workshop was organised for members of the state assembly, permanent secretaries, chairmen of commissions, chief executives of boards and paratatals, among others. (NAN)

Yobe Govt establishes teachers training centre for capacity building

Damaturu, Sept. 7, 2019 (NAN) The Yobe Government has established a Teachers Training Centre in Damaturu to train existing and newly employed teachers to improve teaching in public schools.

Alhaji Baba Malam-Wali, the acting Secretary to the State Government, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday.

He said the establishment of the training centre was a follow up to the recommendations of the technical committee on education.

The statement said the centre would train new teachers and retrain existing teachers to improve the capacity of teachers and quality of education.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Gov. Mai Mala Buni, declared state of emergency on education when he assumed office in May.

Meanwhile, the technical committee on revitalisation of basic and secondary education under the chairmanship of Prof. Mala Daura, former Vice Chancellor, University of Maiduguri, has submitted its report to the governor.(NAN)

Flood ravages 7 LGAs in Yobe

Damaturu, Aug. 16, 2019 (NAN) Flood has washed away several houses and farmlands in seven Local Government Areas of Yobe, threatening harvests this cropping season, an official has said.
Dr Mohammed Goje, the Executive Secretary, State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Damaturu.
He said some communities in Fika, Fune, Machina, Nguru, Geidam, Damaturu and Bursari local government areas lost their houses and farmlands to the flood.
“The agency had visited the affected communities to assess the damage and provide relief materials to victims to meet their immediate needs,” Goje said.
Meanwhile, farmers in the state have expressed fears over their harvests this year due to excessive rainfall and flood.
Alhaji Hassan Kallamu, a farmer in Damaturu, said his sesame seed farm and many other farmlands had been taken over by floods following heavy rainfall consecutively in the last few days.
“We have abandoned the farms for now due to the floods until when the flood rescinds,” he said.
Mr Haruna Abdullahi, a civil servant and farmer, said he planted his farm late which was now taken over by the flood.
“Most parts of the farms around the low lands of Warsalama and Kukareta areas had been swept away, this will definitely affect harvests negatively this year,” he said.
Malam Baba Ali, a farmer in Gujba local government area, decried the heavy down pour which had washed away several farms in the downstream.
“Many farms in Gujba extending to Fika local government areas have been affected by the floods,” Baba said.
Malam Modu Makinta, another farmer in Gujba, said “if the rains persist, the damage will be colossal because some of the farms that are still standing will also be washed away”.
NAN also reports that Alhaji Idi Barde, the state Deputy Governor, had visited Ngalda and Ngelzarma communities to commiserate with over 600 flood victims who lost their houses and farmlands to the floods.
Meanwhile, SEMA had provided relief materials to the affected communities in Fika, Fune, Bursari and Tarmuwa Local Government Areas of the state.
However, communities on the shores of River Yobe, in Bade, Nguru, Jakusko, Yunusari and Giedam Local Government Areas were on red alert of possible floods as the rain intensified. (NAN)

Damaturu, March 12, 2019 (NAN) The Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Yobe has commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for organising elections that substantially complied with the Electoral Act.
Alhaji Umar Kukuri, the state Chairman of the Council, made the commendation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Damaturu on Tuesday.
“IPAC commends INEC for organising a free, fair, credible and acceptable election in the state as attested to by election observers,” he said.
“I want to thank the people of Yobe for conducting themselves peacefully and resisting security threats to elect leaders of their choice.
“I also wish to commend all political parties, the candidates and their supporters for placing collective interest, peace and security above selfish interests.
“The effort of security agencies in ensuring peaceful electioneering across the state is highly commendable,” he added.
Kukuri said: “With the elections now over, IPAC appeals to the people of the state to support the elected public officers to move the state forward.”
“We should put the rivalry of the elections behind us and face the task of building our state,” he further appealed.
Besides, he urged federal and state legislators to support the executive arms of government to provide more dividends of democracy to the electorate. (NAN)

APC National Secretary emerges Yobe guber candidate

Damaturu, Oct. 1, 2018 (NAN) The National Secretary, All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Maimala Buni, has emerged the party’s governorship candidate in Yobe after defeating three others in the party’s primary in Damaturu.
Alhaji Umar Kareto, the Returning Officer of the election, announced the results on Monday.
Kareto said Buni polled 2,797 votes to defeat Rep. Sidi Karasuwa who scored 23 votes, Alhaji Umar Ali eight votes and Aji Kolo who netted four votes.
The election, which lasted for about 13 hours, was conducted peacefully with delegates from the 17 local government areas of the state.
The returning officer commended the governorship aspirants and their supporters for their cooperation during the primary and acceptance of the result.
Karasuwa, a serving member of the House of Representatives, conceded defeat and pledged to work for the success of the candidate and party in the 2019 general elections.
Similarly, Alhaji Umar Ali said the primary was a family affair and pledged to commit his political structure to ensure the victory of the party in the 2019 polls.
In his acceptance speech, Buni commended delegates of the party for the confidence reposed in him, saying it is a collective victory for all the contestants and the APC.
He assured that he would run an all inclusive administration that would carry everyone on board to enhance the development of the state.
Dr Ahmed Lawan, the Leader of the Senate, congratulated the candidate, other aspirants and party supporters for the hitch-free conduct of the election.
He said members of the party had exhibited uncommon unity and passion for the party’s growth and development of the state.
The senate leader also commended the three other aspirants for conceding defeat, describing them as compatriots with the spirit of sportsmanship. (NAN)

Damaturu, Aug. 21, 2018 (NAN) Yobe has recorded another peaceful Eid-el-Kabir Sallah celebration, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.
A correspondent of NAN reported that Muslim faithful conducted their prayers peacefully at various Eid grounds amidst tight security across the state on Tuesday.
The report said the faithful trekked long distances in some places to attend the annual prayers in Damaturu and other major towns.
Security operatives were deployed to strategic positions to keep vigil on individuals and groups tripping to the praying grounds.
A Nigeria Air Force jet was also hovering around the metropolis of the state capital and other places to ensure safety and peaceful celebration in the state.
NAN also reports that a 12-hour restriction of vehicular movements was imposed across the state from 10 p.m. on Monday to 10 a.m. on Tuesday to beef up the security.
Meanwhile, movements have resumed with residents in high festive mood and visiting friends and neighbourhoods as part of the celebration.
Gov. Ibrahim Gaidam had in his Sallah message assured the commitment of his administration to consolidate the improved security in the state.
He also assured residents of his administration’s resolve to improve the welfare of the people. (NAN)

Potiskum (Yobe), July 26, 2018 (NAN) No fewer than 1,396 corps members under the 2018 Batch ‘B’ deployed to Yobe have taken oath of office to serve the state patriotically and diligently during their one-year compulsory service.
Mrs Grace Adzer, the State NYSC Coordinator, on Thursday tasked the corps members to take all aspects of the orientation course with seriousness as it would prepare them to be stable physically, mentally and emotionally.
“The course content of the programme is designed and streamlined to instil in you essential leadership qualities for future challenges,” she said.
Gov. Ibrahim Gaidam of Yobe, represented by Alhaji Muhammad Ngoma, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth, Sport and Social Development, urged the corps members to remain steadfast and serve the country with commitment.
“I urged you to be determined to not only emulate your predecessors in the scheme but to surpass their achievements in all areas of human endeavours.
“The aim of establishment of the scheme would be defeated if you do not integrate freely with the members of your host communities and actively participate in their development efforts,” the governor said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that this is another batch of corps members accepting to serve in the insurgency ravaged state following the restoration of security.
Some corps members posted to the three most affected states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa for the national service had declined to report for or participate in the exercise.
It would be recalled that the NYSC management had also suspended the deployment corps members to the state at the height of Boko Haram attacks until lately. (NAN)

Yobe Govt partners NGO to boost healthcare delivery

Damaturu, July 4, 2018 (NAN) Yobe Government says it will partner with the Health Reform Foundation of Nigeria (HERFON) to improve budget and capacity of personnel in primary health institutions to curb maternal and infant mortality in the state.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry for Local Government Affairs, Alhaji Yahaya Ado, disclosed this when officials of HERFON paid advocacy visit to the ministry.
Ado said that government accords prominence to healthcare delivery and was willing to partner with government and Non-Governmental Organisations to improve the lives of the people especially at the grassroots.
Alhaji Kalli Lawan, HERFON State Coordinator, commended the state government for making investments in the health sector.
He said in spite of the increased in budget of primary healthcare in the state from N360 million in 2017 to N998 million in 2018, there was a need for improvement in the operational activities of primary health facilities to yield results.
“The need for life saving commodities and capacity building for healthcare providers at the primary level remains crucial to improve healthcare in the rural areas,” Kalli said.
He assured that the foundation would engage health institutions and local government authorities in the state to improve the synergy among partners to save more lives.
“Most of the cases reported were avoidable cases, with more commitment, we can collectively reduce maternal and infant mortality in the state,” he said.
The coordinator appealed for cooperation among the stakeholders to work towards budget increase, capacity building and operational development to justify government’s investment in the health sector. (NAN)
