Damaturu, June 20, 2017 (NAN) The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) on Tuesday appealed to stakeholders to support the rights of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Yobe with education, safe living condition and economic rehabilitation.

Mr Gabriel Idoko, Head UNHCR in the state, made the appeal at the commemoration of the 2017 World Refugee Day in Damaturu.

He said: “The displaced persons deserve to continue with their education and provided with safe living conditions.”

Idoko said the society needed to provide the displaced persons with opportunities to rebuild their lives, reintegrate and facilitate their economic rehabilitation to enable them return to normalcy.

Alhaji Idi Jidawa, Permanent Secretary, State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), said life was returning to normalcy in the displaced communities.

He called for collective resolution and cooperation of every member of the society to rebuild the lives of the displaced persons.

“Everyone has a responsibility to contribute to the reconstruction process to bring their life to normalcy,” he said. (NAN)

Damaturu, April 27, 2017 (NAN) The Yobe Primary Healthcare Management Agency says residents of the state have converted mosquito treated nets for malaria protection to fishing nets.

Dr Hauwa Goni, the Executive Secretary of the agency, disclosed this during an advocacy visit to Yobe Islamic Centre, on Thursday in Damaturu.

Goni, who spoke through Alhaji Dauda Bukar, the Director, Primary Healthcare, in the agency, said while government and development partners acquired and distributed the nets free of charge, some beneficiaries are using them as fishing nets.

The secretary also said some other residents use them as shield to nursery trees and even nets in football goal posts.

She said the campaign was designed to engage religious organisations so as to get a larger population from the adherents involved in the prevention of malaria in the communities.

According to her, more than 50 per cent of health challenges are malaria and “that is why we have taken the challenge of the fight against malaria to intensify the campaign’’.

Goni appealed to the residents to improve on their personal hygiene, clean environment and eliminate stagnant waters as pre-emptive measures against malaria.

Dr Zaji Bunu, the Director-General of the centre, assured that the anti-malaria campaign would be discussed during Friday prayer sermons.

He said Islam is about purity and cleanliness of the mind, soul, body and environment.

Bunu said the Imams and their deputies would preach on cleanliness during public gatherings in the state for the message to reach every nook and cranny of the state. (NAN)

Damaturu, March 30, 2017 (NAN) Suspected cases of Cebro Spinal Meningitis (CSM) have been reported in Fika and Nguru Local Government Areas of Yobe.

Dr Bello Kawuwa, the state Commissioner for Health, confirmed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Damaturu on Thursday, saying that the cases are under investigation.

“We are still investigating the cases to determine whether they are CSM; the outcome of the investigation will provide us with the true position,” he said.

However, the commissioner did not give the number of cases recorded so far.

Kawuwa said medical teams have been deployed to the affected areas to access and control the situation.

“We are on top of the situation and we are doing everything possible to control the cases in the two local government areas,” he said.

NAN gathered that the World Health Organisation (WHO) has joined the state medical team to check the situation.

A WHO staff told NAN on condition of anonymity that “we (WHO) are supporting the state team to control the situation”.

Meanwhile, the state Ministry of Health has embarked on sensitisation campaign against communicable diseases, including CSM, as the hot season intensifies. (NAN)

Damaturu, March 22, 2017 (NAN) The Yobe Government says it has proposed life imprisonment without option of fine for any rapist caught so as to curb the growing menace in the state.

Alhaji Mustapha Goniri, the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Damaturu on Wednesday.

He said that government had received series of complaints from parents, some community based organisations and rape victims calling for the review of the existing law.

“The law has been revised from 14 years jail term to life imprisonment without option of fine.

“The bill on the proposed law has been forwarded to the State House of Assembly for passage into law,’’ he said.

NAN reports that some mothers in the state and some Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO) welcomed the proposed law and commended the government for the initiative.

Hajiya Fatima Usman, a mother of four, said told NAN that: “I can’t wait to see this bill passed into law and come into effective use.”

Mrs Kaltume Baba, a woman activist, also commended the state government for introducing the new bill.

Damaturu, March 14, 2017 (NAN) The Yobe Government says it has engaged 17 foreign medical doctors and 11 local consultants to improve healthcare delivery in the state.

Dr Garba Fika, the Executive Secretary, Hospitals Management Board, disclosed this on Tuesday while addressing newsmen in Damaturu.

According to him, the 17 doctors are from Egypt and they would be expected to serve in 13 hospitals across the state.

The 11 specialists, he said, were recruited from the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) to provide consultancy services in the state.

The secretary explained that the Egyptian doctors were subjected to vigorous professional screening at various levels by professional bodies both in Egypt and Nigeria to prove their competence before being engaged by the state government.

“The condition is that they will be on probation for six months after which they will be allowed to continue or not.

“Anyone, however, found wanting will be disengaged immediately,” he said.

Fika said the state would soon become a medical hub in view of its growing number of specialists in various fields providing specialised medical services.

He listed the engagement of the specialists, the Egyptian doctors and the commencement of the medical college of the state university as major boosts to providing efficient healthcare delivery at the doorstep of the people.

“These investments will attract patients from other states seeking medical services and curb medical tourism, as the people of the state will no longer travel out in search of medical services,” he said.

According to the scribe, the state currently has 80 medical doctors and 611 nurses on its employ.

“The 300 medical students in various institutions within and outside the country sponsored by the state government will serve the state after the completion of their studies,” he said.

He commended the state government for rehabilitating and remodelling four hospitals to enhance service delivery.

He listed the hospitals as the Sani Abacha Specialist Hospital in Damaturu and general hospitals in Potiskum, Gashua and Geidam. (NAN)

Damaturu, Jan. 13, 2017 (NAN) Mrs Aisha Buhari, wife of President Muhammadu Buhari, on Friday, donated building materials to support the resettlement and rehabilitation of victims of insurgency in Yobe.

Mrs Buhari, who was represented by Hajiya Yabawa Kolo, delivered the materials in Damaturu to the state’s Deputy Governor, Alhaji Abubakar Aliyu.

She said the materials were to assist the IDPs in reconstructing their shelters destroyed by insurgency.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that items donated include 300 bundles of roofing sheets; 2,000 ceiling sheets; 8,700 pieces of wood; 600 facing board; 100 bundles of batting and nails.

Aliyu, who is also the Chairman, state Committee on Resettlement and Rehabilitation of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), commended Mrs Buhari for her continued support to IDPs and vulnerable persons in the state.

“She had on several occasions identified with the victims of insurgency in Yobe by providing food and non-food items to them.

“On behalf of the resettlement committee, I want to assure her of delivering the materials to the targeted beneficiaries.

“We have as a matter of deliberate policy been conveying all assistance to IDPs in their communities to ensure that only genuine victims benefit from such gestures,” the deputy governor said. (NAN)

LG reconstructs federal road to curb accident – Chairman

Potiskum (Yobe), Sept. 15, 2016 (NAN) The Potiskum Local Government Area of Yobe has reconstructed shoulders on the Potiskum-Kano Federal Highway to curb accidents on the road.

The chairman of the council, Alhaji Musa Mohammed, who conducted newsmen round the road on Thursday, said “the repairs became imperative because of the increasing accidents on the very busy road.

“Although this is a federal highway, we have to work it to save the lives of our people and other road users.’’

Mohammed also said that the council was exploring available sources of revenue, which were hitherto neglected, to generate funds.

“Township roads, drainages and healthcare constitute the basic challenge to the communities in the local government area.

“The council has constructed drainages within the central market and the livestock market to enhance trading in the markets.

“The council has purchased three mass transit vehicles and official cars for principal officers of the council for revenue drive and to enhance productivity,’’ he said.

Mohammed said the council had provided drugs, consumables and a generator for the Potiskum maternity clinic. (NAN)
