UNFPA, Canada constitute committee on GBV/HTP project

Abuja, March 13, 2020 (NAN) UN Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Canadian Government have constituted a Project Steering Committee (PSC) to oversee activities toward tackling Gender Based Violence (GBV) and Harmful Traditional Practices (HTP) in the country.

The committee was raised on Thursday during a two-day stakeholders orientation workshop and Project Steering Committee (PSC) meeting of the UNFPA/Canada GBV/HTP project in Abuja.

Dr Muideen Olatunji, the Executive Secretary of Oyo State Primary Healthcare Board, emerged the chair of the GBV/HTPs PSC, while Dr Aliyu Maigoro, the Bauchi State Commissioner for Health, emerged as Deputy Chair.

Others on the committee are Hajiya Kulu Abdullahi, the Sokoto State Commissioner for Women Affairs as Secretary 1, while representative of UNFPA is to act as Secretary 2, to provide technical assistance to the committee. 

The committee, which shall officially meet once every six months apart from emergency meetings when the need arises, shall form quorum with six members during any meeting.

The new PSC is to hold its next meeting in September.

The Canada-funded project launched in March 2018 to run till February 2021 is aimed at addressing gaps in GBV and HTPs in the country.

It is also aimed at achieving zero Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and Harmful Practices (HPs), zero preventable maternal deaths and zero unmet need for Family Planning (FP).

The PSC was chaired by the Sokoto State commissioner for Budget and Planning during the first year of the project.

It is made up of representatives of key organisations who are partners in the project or those with particular expertise to lend to the project.

Others are clients with intended users of the output of the project.

The committee is to also to monitor project implementation, identify risk areas, among others. (NAN)
