“We regret electing Speaker Gafasa”- Kano suspended lawmaker
Madari, APC Warawa Constituency, who was one of the five legislators suspended by the House over alleged misconduct, told newsmen on Tuesday in Kano that they regretted electing Gafasa as their speaker.
He said the action violated the constitution and rules of the House, adding that the speaker lack locus standi to suspend them.
Madari said: “I wish to tell you that we regretted electing Gafasa as the speaker of the House because he is not conversant with the rules of the house. It is one of the greatest mistakes we have made.
“The constitution and also the standing rules of the House did not give the speaker the right to just suspend any member without following due process”.
“Section 109 (a, b, c and d) stated the power of the speaker which certain processes must be followed before any legislator can be suspended for wrong doing, so also the rule of the house.
“We are elected by our people and no one has the power to suspend us without any reason in a plenary that lasted for just 11 minutes”.
Madari argued that any member accused of wrongdoing should be accorded fair hearing to defend the charges against him.
NAN reports that the House at plenary on Monday slammed a six months suspension on five its members over the March 9 rowdy session. (NAN)
