Woman, 39, arraigned over alleged N3.5m fraud

Ikeja, April 1, 2019 (NAN) For allegedly obtaining N3.5 million loan under false pretenses, a businesswoman, Omoruyi Juliet, on Monday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

Thirty-nine-year-old Juliet, whose address is unknown, is facing four-count charge bordering on fraud, cheating and stealing before Chief Magistrate Olufunke Sule-Amzat.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Benson Emuerhi, told the court that the defendant on Dec. 19, 2018 fraudulently obtained N3.5 million loan from Groomy Microfinance Bank, Abule-Egba, Lagos under the pretext of using it to facilitate a business.

“Juliet collected the loan with agreement to pay back with interest but failed to do so.

“All efforts made by the bank for the defendant to repay the loan proved abortive as she absconded to an unknown destination and her phone was unreachable.

“Juliet was later apprehended and handed over to the police at Abattoir police division for questioning,” Emuerhi said.

According to the prosecutor, the offences contravened Sections 168 (D), 287, 323 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

She, however, pleaded not guilty.

In her ruling, Sule-Amzat granted the businesswoman N500, 000 bail with two sureties in like sum.

The chief magistrate adjourned the case until April 11 for mention. (NAN)
