Kafanchan (Kaduna State), April 2, 2020 (NAN) A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Kafanchan, Kaduna State has sentenced a 30-year-old ex-convict, Bege Adamu, to three years in a correctional facility for stealing a motorcycle.

Adamu was docked alongside Joefrey John who was handed a one and half year jail term or fine of N100, 000.

The Presiding Judge, Abdulaziz Ibrahim, also ordered the two accused persons to be given 20 strokes of the cane each.

The Police Prosecutor, Insp. Esther Bishen, had told the court that one Ishaya James of Ungwan Masara, Kafanchan, reported the matter at the station on March 23.

Bishen said the complainant, a commercial motorcycle rider, alleged that he was going about his business at about 7:30pm on March 20 when the two accused persons flagged him down to convey them to Zauru.

She said that while in motion, the two accused persons were said to have pushed the complainant off his bike and zoomed off to an unknown destination.

According to her, police investigation revealed that the two accused persons stole the bike and gave it to one Kalu Obioma, now at large.

She said the actions of the accused persons amounted to criminal conspiracy and theft, contrary to Sections 58 and 270 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law.

When the charges were read to them, they both pleaded guilty and begged the court for leniency.

The prosecution thereafter prayed the court to try them summarily in line with Section 125 (8) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law. (NAN)

Kafanchan (Kaduna) April 1, 2020 (NAN) Dr Sa’ad Usman, The Emir of Jere in Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State, has died at the age of 70.

NAN reports that the late Emir was the husband of Nenadi Usman, a former Minister of Finance and one time Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The Salanke Jere and Spokesperson of the Jere Chiefdom, Alhaji Hamza Yakubu, confirmed his death to the News Agency of Nigeria.

Yakubu said the traditional ruler died in the early hours of Wednesday at his Kaduna residence following a protracted illness.

“Our Emir passed on at about 2:40 a.m today after a protracted illness. You know he had been having a long standing spinal cord problem.

“He had received treatment at different hospitals, including National Hospital, Abuja and one in London.

“We pray to God to bless his soul and grant him paradise,” he added

He said the late Emir will be buried by 2p.m in Jere according to Islamic rites. (NAN)

COVID-19: Panicky Kafanchan residents protest arrival of lady from Lagos

Kafanchan (Kaduna), March 29, 2020 (NAN) Fear-stricken residents of Kafanchan in Kaduna State on Sunday went into a state of panic following news of the arrival of a lady from Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria(NAN), reports that Lagos, with 59 confirmed cases, has the highest number of persons that had tested positive to the deadly Coronavirus. The pandemic has continued to spread across the country, with a total of 97 cases confirmed positive so far.

Kaduna Governor Nasir el-Rufai, and his Bauchi counterpart, Abubakar Mohammed, have both tested positive to the ravaging pandemic.

The lady was said to have traveled from Lagos to visit her friend at Ungwan Mission Area, Kafanchan, and arrived the town on Saturday evening.

A resident, Marcus Abu, told NAN that residents of the area got wind of the girl’s arrival and quickly mobilised to the friend’s house where they locked the duo in the room on the suspicion that the visitor may have the virus.

“Residents of the area rushed to the house of the girl upon hearing that a friend of hers had arrived from Lagos.

“They even threatened to pelt the two ladies with stones, if they didn’t go inside, when they found them sitting outside the apartment,” he added

Mr Peter Averik, Chairman of Jema’a Local Government, who led a team of medical personnel to evacuate the two ladies to the isolation centre at the General Hospital, Kafanchan, urged the residents to remain calm.

“Kafanchan residents should remain calm and not panic; the lady only came into town from Lagos without showing any symptoms of the virus.

“Besides, no case can be confirmed until proven so by the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control,” he told newsmen at the hospital.

Also speaking, Chief Medical Director of the Hospital, Dr Samuel Kure, said that the two ladies showed no symptoms of COVID 19.

“The two ladies showed no sign of being infected, but they have been put on isolation at the hospital as a precautionary measure,” he said.

Kure said that a team from the NCDC is expected on Monday from Kaduna, to take their samples for testing.

NAN correspondent reports that fear-stricken patients and other people scampered for safety when the two ladies were brought to the hospital. (NAN)

Kafanchan (Kaduna), March 27, 2020 (NAN) Mr Peter Averik, Chairman of Jema’a Local Government in Kaduna State, has ordered the complete closure of Kafanchan main market and other markets within the area.

A statement signed by the area’s information officer Simeon Dauda, quoted Averik as saying that the closure became necessary to prevent an outbreak of the Coronavirus in the area.

“This decision is informed by a sincere sense of responsibility and commitment to ensure the safety of people against the pandemic.

“The local government is not prepared to lose anyone to the pandemic; precautionary measures or strategies taken towards this end can never be too much,” he said

Averik, however, said that shop owners, who sell food and drugs outside the market environment, would be allowed to operate provided they are organised.

“This decision is very crucial and necessary in view of the influx of people into the markets and the need to prevent the dreaded pandemic from taking root and spreading in the local government.

“However, shop owners, who sell drugs and food stuffs along the major streets other than the markets, will be allowed to operate.

“As long as they organise themselves and their customers to avoid crowded situations within their business premises, they will be allowed to operate,” Averik added

According to him, though the measures taken may cause little pain, members of the public must show understanding and patience.

The chairman further called on banks operating in the local government to take precautionary measures to protect their customers from getting infected.

“Specifically, we are advising banks to provide hand sanitizers or water and soap for their customers. They must also ensure that no customer is allowed to operate the ATM without washing his or her hands,” he said. (NAN)

Kafanchan (Kaduna) March 26, 2020 (NAN) Danjuma La’ah, the Senator representing Southern Kaduna Senatorial District, has urged his constituents to comply with directives of the Kaduna State Government aimed at averting outbreak of COVID-19 in the state.

In a statement in Kafanchan on Thursday, La’ah said the virus was spreading fast in the country, hence the need for people in the state to take preventive measures adopted by government more seriously.

“Following the increasing cases of coronavirus in parts of the country, including the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, I call on my constituents to adhere to all safety measures by the state government.

“These measures are informed by sincere sense of responsibility and commitment to ensure the safety of  people in the state against the corona virus infection.

“We are not prepared to lose anyone to this COVID-19 pandemic. As such, no precautionary measures or strategies taken towards this end would be too much,” he said.

La’ah said that the emphasis on prevention was the best as the healthcare system in the state might be overwhelmed by an outbreak of COVID-19.

He said that the measures taken might cause a little pain, but pleaded with the people to show understanding and patient as it would just be for a while.

He advised the people to adhere to recommended hygiene instructions of frequent handwashing and use of hand sanitizer as well as guidelines on social distancing.

The senator said that he had made provisions for hand sanitizers and nose masks in the eight local government areas that made up his senatorial district.

He appealed to drugstores and sellers of other essential commodities not to take advantage of the current situation by inflating the prices of their items.

NAN reports that the Kaduna State Government had asked civil servants from level 12 and below to remain at home in the next 30 days.

It also ordered closure of markets with exception of food and drug sellers and also banned large gatherings, motorcycles and tricycles as part of measures to avert an outbreak of COVID-19 in the state. (NAN)

Teenager sentenced to 6 months community service for stealing phone

Kafanchan (Kaduna) March 25, 2020 (NAN) A Kafanchan Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday sentenced an 18-year-old man, Blessed Samson, to six months of community service for stealing a mobile phone.

Samson was charged with theft, contrary to section 270 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law.

The Police Prosecutor, Insp. Johnson Ibudu, had told the court that one Charity John of Takau area reported the matter at the station on March 22.

Ibudh said the complainant alleged that her Vivo phone valued at N3, 500 was stolen from her son by an unknown person in the month of February.

He noted that during police investigation it was discovered that the defendant committed the act and the phone recovered from him.

When the charge was read to him, he pleaded guilty, and begged the court for leniency.

The prosecution thereafter prayed the court to try him summarily in line with section 125 (8) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law.

In her ruling, Magistrate Mary Adams sentenced him to six months of community work. (NAN)

COVID-19: Jema’a LG Chair commends Gov. el-Rufai for pro-activeness

Kafanchan (Kaduna) March 24, 2020 (NAN) Mr Peter Averik, Chairman of Jema’a Local Government Area of Kaduna State, has commended Gov. Nasir el-Rufai’s proactive response to the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

In a statement signed by the Local Government’s Information Officer, Simeon Dauda, in Kafanchan on Tuesday, Averik said that the governor took measures to prevent the spread of the virus by shutting schools, campuses and banned all public gatherings of more than 50 people.

He said that although there was no reported case of the virus in Kaduna State yet, the measures put in place by the state government was necessary to prevent an outbreak.

According to him, the emphasis on prevention was the only logical thing to do as the healthcare system in the state may be overwhelmed by an outbreak of COVID-19.

He advised the people in the area to adhere to recommended hygiene instructions on frequent hand washing and use of hand sanitizer and guidelines on social distancing

“The restrictions on movement and observing good personal hygiene remain the best strategy for people to prevent themselves from getting infected with the deadly virus.

“We must all take precautionary measures as advised by medical experts seriously, especially regular washing of hands with soap, social distancing among other hygienic practices as prevention is better than cure,” Averik said.

He said that the strict precautionary strategies adopted by the government are not meant to inflict hardship on the people, rather to ensure public safety.

Averik pleaded with religious and traditional leaders to complement the efforts of the state government by sensitising the people at the grassroots on the virus and the need to comply with restriction directives.

The Chairman also called on the people of the Local Government to take to God in prayers for His intervention during these difficult times.

NAN reports that the Kaduna State Government have directed that civil servants from level 12 and below to remain at home for the next 30 days as part of measures to avert an outbreak of COVID-19 in the state. (NAN)

Kaduna statistics institution says trespassing herdsmen constituting security threat

Manchok (Kaduna) March 20, 2020 (NAN) The authorities of the Federal School of Statistics, Manchok, Kaduna State, have said that the lack of a perimeter fencing around the institution was exposing the school community to constant security threat.

“The school sits on 33.27 hectares and has no fence; herdsmen freely trespass into the compound and graze on it which constitute a security threat to us,” the Rector, Mr Victor Mangbon, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Friday in Manchok.

He lamented the porous nature of the school environment which allows cows to move around even during classes, causing distraction to the students and teachers.

“Another challenge is that of vandals. Unknown persons take advantage of our porous situation to remove just everything on sight.

“Farmers also enter the compound and put up farms on every available space. This is certainly not ideal,” he said.

Mangbon said that the school had not been able to erect a fence around the compound because of limited resources.

“We cannot do this fencing on our own. The resources are just not there,” he said.

The Rector said that the little renovations going on in the school were funded with internally generated revenue because no allocation or intervention was coming from any quarters.

He appealed for the establishment of an agency to cater for Monotechnics the same way TETFUND was catering for Universities, Colleges of Education and Polytechnics.

“We are like a Monotechnic and we are appealing for interventions. We wrote to TETFUND but they will tell you we are not in their mandate for any intervention.

“So, if we can have a government agency that will cater for our own peculiar needs just like the Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education have TETFUND, we will appreciate it,” he said

He called on prominent sons and daughters of southern Kaduna to come to the rescue of the school given that it was the only National Diploma awarding institution in the entire Southern Kaduna Senatorial District.

“We need such support to operate optimally so as to attain the mandate of meeting the statistical manpower needs of Nigeria and the entire West Africa sub-region.

“This is supposed to be an international school that caters for the statistics manpower of not just Nigeria, but West Africa as a whole.

“Ghana, Mali, Niger, Senegal and other West African nations are supposed to send their people here for training in statistics, but that is not the reality on the ground,” he lamented.

A correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), who visited the institution, observed that it had no semblance of a tertiary institution as only a handful of physical structures, begging for refurbishment, could be seen. (NAN)

Kafanchan(Kaduna)March 20,2020(NAN) A 19-year-old man, Mohammed Yuguda, was on Friday brought before a Chief Magistrates’ Court in Kafanchan, for stealing pot of honey.

Yuguda was charged with criminal conspiracy and theft, contrary to sections 58 and 270 of the Penal Code Law of Kaduna State.

The Police Prosecutor, Insp Esther Bishen, told the Court that one Mathew Peter of Zilani village reported the matter at the Kaura Divisional Police Headquarters on March 3.

Bishen noted that the complainant alleged that he and three others had gone to check their pots of honey in the bush when they caught the accused, and three others now at large, stealing them.

When the charges were read to the accused person, he pleaded not guilty.

The Prosecutor thereafter prayed the court for an adjournment to enable her call witnesses.

In his ruling, the magistrate, Abdulaziz Ibrahim, granted the accused person bail in the sum of N200, 000 and a surety in like sum.

Ibrahim adjourned the matter till April 1, for further mention. (NAN)

Kafanchan (Kaduna) March 19, 2020 (NAN) A Non-Governmental Organization, Aid Foundation, has tasked communities in Southern Kaduna on the need to engage government on service delivery and for them to expose corrupt practices.

The Programme Officer of the NGO’s Scrap-C project, Chinanzo Umenwobi, made the call at a dialogue it organized between the government and people of Southern Kaduna on Thursday at Kafanchan.

Umenwobi said the event was a platform for citizens and government to interface on service delivery.

“It provides a rare opportunity for government and citizens to interface because a lot of times citizens do not have opportunity to interact with those who provide services for them.

“But this town hall meeting provides that opportunity which I would say is rare. It is an opportunity for you to maximize your citizenship.

“The fight against corruption is a fight for everyone. If you think corruption does not affect you, think about the people who die as a result of someone squandering money meant to fix our roads.

“Under our Upright for Nigeria Campaign, we emphasize that citizens begin to do these things themselves.

“And we know that service providers are vital in this struggle, so we provide the avenue for service providers to interact with citizens as we all work together to eradicate corruption in our country,’’ she added

In his remarks, the Commissioner of Education, Shehu Makarfi, urged communities to keep track of projects being executed by the ministry and report any unwholesome practices.

Makarfi, who was represented by an Assistant Director in the ministry, Saidu Suleiman, restated the commitment of the state government to provide quality education in all schools.

He noted that about 6, 000 teachers would soon be engaged by the state government to boost manpower in the education sector.

NAN reports that the event, attended  by stakeholders from the public and private sectors, featured questions and suggestion from participants on better ways  to render services to the people.(NAN)
