Harvest of goals as Manchester City demolish Schalke 04 for place in Champions League quarter-finals

Manchester (UK), March 12, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Rampant Manchester City demolished a woeful Schalke 04 7-0 to complete a 10-2 aggregate win and become the third English side into the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday.

Manchester City’s record home win in Europe did not look likely after a quiet opening 35 minutes.

But once Sergio Aguero began the rout from the penalty kick spot it became embarrassingly easy as Manchester City reached the last eight for the third time in four years.

Aguero doubled Manchester City’s lead three minutes later and the impressive Leroy Sane made it 3-0 before halftime.

Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva finished off flowing moves after the break and youngster Phil Foden bagged his first European goal before Gabriel Jesus made it seven.

Manchester City, who trailed 2-1 in the away leg before turning it around late on, join Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur in the quarter-finals.

Aguero penalty gives Manchester City 1-0 win over West Ham United

Manchester (UK), Feb. 27, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Sergio Aguero’s penalty gave champions Manchester City a 1-0 win over West Ham United at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday to stay a point behind Premier League leaders Liverpool.

The decisive moment came in the 59th minute when Felipe Anderson was ruled to have brought down Bernardo Silva and Aguero coolly slotted home from the spot.

Former City manager Manuel Pellegrini set his West Ham team up to frustrate the hosts and they did an excellent job for most of the game.

The Hammers forced City into wide areas where they struggled to create openings.

City camped in the visitors’ half for the opening 45 minutes with David Silva going close to breaking the deadlock when he hit the post after an excellent low cross.

West Ham went close after the break when substitute Manuel Lanzini found Andy Carroll at the back post, but City keeper Ederson did well to parry the forward’s well-struck effort.

City boss Pep Guardiola promptly threw on Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva from the bench and they changed the tempo and flow of the game.

Newport boss aiming to pull off historic FA Cup upset against Manchester City

Manchester (UK), Feb. 15, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Newport County have an opportunity to cause the biggest upset in FA Cup history by beating Premier League champions Manchester City in the fifth round at Rodney Parade on Saturday, according to manager Michael Flynn.

Fourth-tier Newport have won just twice in League Two since the end of November and have slipped to 15th in the standings, 82 places below top-flight leaders City in the football pyramid.

in spite of their underdog status, Flynn hopes the stars are aligned for Newport to add Pep Guardiola’s City to their list of FA Cup scalps this season, which includes Leicester City and Middlesbrough.

“If we win this, whether it’s extra time or penalties and I don’t care how we do it, it will be the biggest shock in FA Cup history,” Flynn told reporters.

“I say that with the biggest respect to other big giant-killings.

“My reasons for that are because of the sheer gulf in finances, the quality of the players Man City have, the level they are playing at, and that they have the best manager in the world right now.”

Manchester City could expect a culture shock when they visit Rodney Parade, a ground which until a few years ago was used exclusively for rugby and with a capacity below 8,000.

The uneven pitch may not be ideal for City’s attractive brand of pass-and-move football but Flynn remains grounded about his side’s chances to be in the draw for the quarter-finals.

“I’m not unrealistic or delusional. I’m hoping they rest a few.

“I want a few of them to have a bad game and I want every single one of our players to play as well as they can, because that’s the only chance we’ve got,” he added.

“It’s always a little bit easier when you’re at home. I wouldn’t even be contemplating a win if it was at the Etihad.” (Reuters/NAN)

Manchester City crush Chelsea 6-0 as Aguero scores another hat-trick

Manchester (UK), Feb. 10, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Manchester City’s on-fire striker Sergio Aguero struck his second hat-trick in a week as the champions ruthlessly destroyed woeful Chelsea in a 6-0 win at The Etihad on Sunday.

The title-holders return to the top of the English Premier League (EPL) with the victory, level on 65 points with Liverpool but ahead on goals difference.

They have however played one more game than their rivals.

Third-placed Tottenham Hotspur, who beat Leicester City 3-1 earlier on Sunday, are five points behind.

Aguero, who scored a hat-trick seven days ago against Arsenal, has now equalled Alan Shearer’s record of 11 Premier League hat-tricks.

Raheem Sterling fired Manchester City ahead in the fourth minute with a side-foot finish after a quick free-kick from Kevin De Bruyne had caught the Chelsea defence napping.

After Aguero had somehow missed an open goal from two metres, the Argentine promptly beat goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga with a blistering strike from 25 metres.

A poor header towards his own goal from Chelsea’s Ross Barkley gifted Aguero with City’s third goal and then a low drive from Ilkay Gundogan made it 4-0 after 25 minutes.

Following the break, Aguero, who also became City’s top scorer in league games, headed against the bar.

He then completed his hat-trick from the penalty kick spot after Sterling had been brought down by Cesar Azpilicueta.

Sterling completed the rout, turning in a low cross from Oleksandr Zinchenko in the 80th.

Aguero hat-trick fires Manchester City to 3-1 win over Arsenal

Manchester (UK), Feb. 3, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Sergio Aguero’s hat-trick led Manchester City to a 3-1 win over Arsenal on Sunday and back into second place in the English Premier League (EPL).

The defending champions are now two points behind leaders Liverpool.

The victory put the pressure on Liverpool, ahead of their trip to West Ham United on Monday.

Juergen Klopp’s side have 61 points, with champions Manchester City on 59 points and Tottenham Hotspur on 57 points.

Aguero gave Manchester City the lead after 48 seconds with a stooping header, after Aymeric Laporte had robbed Alex Iwobi and whipped in a cross.

Manchester City were dominant, but the Gunners got back on level terms in the 11th minute.

That was when Nacho Monreal flicked on a Lucas Torreira corner kick and defender Laurent Koscielny headed in from two yards out.

Aguero struck again just before the break, tapping in a low cross from Raheem Sterling, who had combined well with Ilkay Gundogan in the build-up.

Manchester City’s record scorer wrapped up the win, with Sterling again the provider.

But as Aguero slid in to meet his low cross, the ball appeared to go in off his arm.

It was Aguero’s 10th hat-trick in the EPL, a record bettered only by Alan Shearer who scored 11.

EPL: Manchester City suffer title blow at Newcastle United

Newcastle (UK), Jan. 30, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Reigning English Premier League (EPL) champions Manchester City suffered a shock 2-1 defeat at Newcastle United on Tuesday .

The result further swung the EPL title door wide open for leaders Liverpool, who take on Leicester City on Wednesday.

Manchester City had won their previous eight games in all competitions, scoring 33 goals in the process.

They looked on course to close the gap on Liverpool to one point when Sergio Aguero put them in front after 24 seconds at St James’ Park.

But Pep Guardiola’s side were nowhere near their fluent best and Salomon Rondon equalised after 66 minutes.

Matt Ritchie’s late penalty kick secured victory for Newcastle United and piled title pressure on Manchester City.

English FA Cup: Millwall stun Everton, Manchester City crush Burnley

London, Jan. 26, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Second-tier Millwall twice came from behind to beat top-flight Everton 3-2 in Saturday’s big FA Cup fourth-round upset although their last-gasp triumph was tinged with controversy.

Manchester City continued their pursuit of silverware on four fronts with a 5-0 thrashing of Burnley and Premier League Wolverhampton Wanderers narrowly avoided defeat at third-tier Shrewsbury Town.

However, the big drama came later in a rain-sodden south London.

Richarlison’s 43rd-minute shot from 25 metres opened the scoring for Everton as it squirmed past Millwall keeper Jordan Archer but Lee Gregory’s header levelled the score before halftime.

Substitute Cenk Tosun restored Everton’s lead but Millwall, quarter-finalists two years ago, again hit back three minutes later through Jake Cooper, although Everton were incensed as the ball appeared to come off his arm.

With VAR being used at selected ties — but not at the Den — the goal was allowed, despite a large video screen replaying the incident.

Everton had only themselves to blame, though, when they failed to defend Shaun Williams’s dangerous free kick in stoppage time and Murray Wallace beat England keeper Jordan Pickford from six metres out.

“My arm was alongside my body but you would have to give every penalty that hit your arm if you are going to pull that up,” Cooper said of his goal.

“We’ll take that and luckily we got the winner.”

Burnley made seven changes to their line-up for the visit to City and paid the price as Pep Guardiola’s side made it 33 goals from eight straight wins in all competitions.

Gabriel Jesus put City ahead with a fine strike after 23 minutes. Bernardo Silva, Kevin De Bruyne and Sergio Aguero also scored, with a Kevin Long own goal completing the demolition.

Shrewsbury are 54 rungs lower than four-times winners Wolves on the English football ladder but were within touching distance of a famous FA Cup victory.

It took a Matt Doherty goal to break their hearts in stoppage time.

After 70 minutes at New Meadow the side managed by former Wolves player Sam Ricketts were 2-0 up thanks to goals by Greg Docherty and Luke Waterfall.

But Wolves, who knocked out Liverpool in the third round, fought back with goals from Raul Jimenez and Doherty to keep their names in the hat for Monday’s draw.

“Our players can take a lot from that,” said Ricketts.

“Neither side will have wanted a replay but we will have another game. Don’t write us off yet, we went to Stoke and won in a replay.”

League Two (fourth-tier) side Newport County, who knocked out 2016 Premier League champions Leicester City to reach the fourth round, lived to fight another day as they clinched a 1-1 draw at Championship club Middlesbrough.

Newport will approach their replay full of hope after thrilling their 1,200 travelling fans with a scrambled late equaliser from Matthew Dolan, a former Boro academy player who never played a first-team game for the club.

Newcastle United and Watford made clear where the cup ranks in their list of priorities by making 18 changes between them for their all-Premier League meeting at St James’ Park.

The visitors won 2-0 with goals from Andre Gray and Isaac Success. It is only the second time in 10 seasons that Watford have reached the fifth round.

Brighton & Hove Albion drew 0-0 at home to Championship side West Bromwich Albion.

League One side Doncaster Rovers reached the fifth round for the first time in 63 years after beating League Two Oldham 2-1 with two goals from Ben Whiteman, his winner a controversial penalty in injury time.

League One side Portsmouth have an impressive FA Cup tradition and remain in the reckoning after their 1-1 draw with QPR, for whom Nahki Wells equalised Lee Brown’s opener.

Manchester City ease past Huddersfield to close EPL gap on Liverpool

Huddersfield (England), Jan. 20, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Manchester City barely broke a sweat as they easily beat bottom club Huddersfield Town to close the gap on Premier League leaders Liverpool to four points on Sunday.

Danilo’s deflected shot gave City the lead in an opening half in which they were not at their sharpest.

That goal took City’s goal tally to 100 in all competitions this season — making them the only club in Europe’s top five leagues to reach that total.

Pep Guardiola’s side upped the tempo early in the second half and Raheem Sterling headed in their second goal in the 54th minute before Leroy Sane made it 3-0 two minutes later.

It was a poor advert for the Premier League with Huddersfield offering next to nothing as an attacking force.

City’s fourth consecutive win since back-to-back losses over Christmas took them to 56 points from 23 games with Liverpool on 60 after they beat Crystal Palace on Saturday 4-3.

Toothless Huddersfield, who had caretaker boss Mark Hudson in charge for the first time, have only 11 points and are 10 points behind Newcastle United who are 17th.

City had scored 19 goals in their previous three games without reply — including two Cup romps against lower league opponents — but they were subdued in Sunday’s first half.

“The way we played we didn’t deserve more than three goals,” Guardiola said. “We will improve in the future.

“We have to demand more from ourselves in every game and do our best, but sometimes it’s difficult. They defended deep and man-to-man.”

Huddersfield set out their stall from the start, retreating back behind the ball to try to frustrate City.

It worked but City did get ahead in the 18th minute when Danilo let fly from range and the ball flew off the head of defender Christopher Schindler past keeper Jonas Lossl.

Despite their clear superiority, City did not add to their total before halftime and it was not until after the break that they rediscovered the slick passing for which they are known.

An intricate spell of passing ended with the ball being played to Sane inside the area and his cross was met with a diving header from Sterling.

Two minutes later Danilo intercepted a wayward pass and his first-time ball forward was cushioned by the head of Sergio Aguero to Sane who neatly side-footed inside the post.

“This game can teach us and show what we have to do to improve,” Guardiola said.

“We’ve scored a lot of goals. So far, so good. One team has been better but we’re in January and there’s many more games to play.

“You don’t win or lose the Premier League in January. We have to focus on what we have to do.

“If Liverpool win, we have to win. And if Liverpool lose then we also have to win.” (Reuters/NAN)

Manchester City ease past Wolves 3-0 to cut gap at EPL top

Manchester (UK), Jan. 14, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Gabriel Jesus scored twice as Manchester City beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-0 to cut English Premier League (EPL) leaders Liverpool’s advantage to four points on Monday.

Pep Guardiola’s free-scoring side needed only 10 minutes to go ahead as Jesus tapped in after a flowing move.

Nine minutes later Wolves were left with a seemingly hopeless task as central defender Willy Boly was shown a straight red card for a ferocious tackle.

Wolves actually threatened on occasions, but when Raheem Sterling was tripped in the area and Jesus tucked away a 39th-minute penalty kick to double Manchester City’s lead it became different.

It was now all about how many goals the hosts would score.

To their credit, Wolves were diligent in defence after the break and restricted Manchester City’s chances, although they did concede again.

That was when substitute Kevin de Bruyne whipped in a cross that glanced in off Wolves’ Conor Coady.

Manchester City have now racked up 19 goals in their last three games, although the other two were Cup wins over second-tier Rotherham United and third-tier Burton Albion.

Manchester City end Liverpool’s unbeaten run, cut EPL lead to 4 points

Manchester (UK), Jan. 4, 2019 (Reuters/NAN) Leroy Sane struck the winner as Manchester City beat visiting Liverpool 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium in a fierce English Premier League contest on Thursday.

The victory helped the defending champions to inflict the first loss of the 2018/2019 season on Juergen Klopp’s side to cut their lead at the top to four points.

Sadio Mane hit the post for Liverpool in the 18th minute and from the resulting scramble, John Stones’s attempted clearance bounced off his goalkeeper Ederson.

The Manchester City defender did superbly to clear off the line with the ball millimetres from going in.

It was Manchester City who broke through five minutes before the break when Bernardo Silva found Sergio Aguero inside the penalty box.

The Argentine unleashed a fierce drive, from the tightest of angles, to fire past Alisson and make it 1-0.

Liverpool responded strongly after the break, though.

They drew level when Andrew Robertson met a deep Trent Alexander-Arnold cross with a cushioned volley for Roberto Firmino to head in from close range.

Manchester City were not finished, though, and restored their lead in the 72nd minute when Raheem Sterling broke from midfield and fed Sane on the left.

The German winger drove home off the inside of the far post.

Aguero went close to a third after Sterling led a swift counter-attack but Alisson was up to the task.

At the other end, Ederson produced a fine save to keep out a Mohammed Salah effort.
