Manchester City stunned by Crystal Palace, trail Liverpool by 4 points

Manchester (UK), Dec. 22, 2018 (Reuters/NAN) Manchester City suffered their first home loss in the English Premier League in eight months through a shock 2-3 defeat by Crystal Palace on Saturday.

It left Pep Guardiola’s champions trailing leaders Liverpool by four points.

Manchester City, who had won all nine home games in the league this season, are in second place on 44 points.

They are behind Liverpool who won 2-0 at Wolves on Friday and are now on 48 points.

German midfielder Ilkay Gundogan nodded City in front in the 27th minute, meeting a Fabian Delph cross from deep with a firm, downward header.

But Jeffrey Schlupp brought Palace level with a low diagonal shot into the bottom corner and Andros Townsend stunned the Etihad Stadium with a sensational volley.

Bernardo Sivla’s header out was met first time by Townsend who blasted his volley from 30 metres past helpless Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson.

Crystal Palace went 3-1 up through a Luka Milivojevic penalty kick in the 51st minute, after Kyle Walker brought down Max Meyer inside the box.

Guardiola brought on substitutes Sergio Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne and it was the Belgian midfielder who gave the home side hope with a cross-shot in the 85th minute.

Gabriel Jesus missed a stoppage-time chance when he headed over a De Bruyne cross from a promising position.

It was their first home league loss since the Manchester derby on April 7.

Smooth Manchester City outclass Manchester United with 3-1 derby win

Manchester (UK), Nov. 11, 2018 (Reuters/NAN) English Premier League leaders Manchester City turned on the style with a 3-1 win over Manchester United in their derby clash on Sunday.

The result left Pep Guardiola’s unbeaten side two points clear of Liverpool at the top.

A long season remains for Manchester City to prove again their dominance in the English Premier League.

But, there is no doubt at all about who are the top dogs in the city of Manchester.

It was not until the 86th minute, when substitute Ilkay Gundogan finished off a 44-pass move for City’s third that the outcome was decided.

But when it came to the quality of their football, their passing, movement, organisation, individual flair and pace, Manchester City were in a different league from Jose Mourinho’s side.

Manchester United are now 12 points behind Manchester City, languishing in eighth place.

That gap was evident throughout this encounter where Manchester United could offer little more than determination and effort in response to the smooth and stylish display from the champions.

David Silva fired Manchester City ahead in the 12th minute after a Raheem Sterling cross from the left was turned back across the goal by Bernardo Silva.

The Spaniard took his time before blasting home.

For the rest of the half, Cape Town City were comfortable in possession, probing but not overly threatening Manchester United’s goal.

They were seemingly content to wait for a response from Mourinho’s men.

But in just the third minute after the interval, Manchester City doubled their lead.

Aguero burst goalwards to play a clever exchange with Riyad Mahrez, before thumping the ball, from a tight angle, past David de Gea.

Mourinho brought on Romelu Lukaku for Jesse Lingard in the 57th minute and within seconds the Belgian forward helped get his team back in the game.

Lukaku was brought down inside the area by Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson and French forward Anthony Martial confidently converted the spot kick.

But it was a false dawn, as Manchester United came back from two goals down to win this fixture. last season.

They showed similar character in their UEFA Champions League win at Juventus on Wednesday.

But they did not have the tools to open up Manchester City nor keep their own rearguard secure.

Four minutes from the end City secured the victory, their 10th in 12 games this season, when the outstanding Bernardo Silva picked out German Gundogan in the area.

Manchester City’s Mahrez misses late penalty in goalless draw at Liverpool

Liverpool (UK), Oct. 7, 2018 (Reuters/NAN) Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez missed an 86th minute penalty as the Premier League champions were held to a 0-0 draw at Liverpool in a top of the table clash on Sunday.

Substitute Leroy Sane was brought down in the area by the lunging Virgil van Dijk but Algerian Mahrez blasted the spot kick high over the bar at Anfield.

The result leaves the pair level with Chelsea on 20 points although City stay top on goal difference.

Liverpool, who remain unbeaten in their last 18 home games against City, came out roaring and dominated the opening 10 minutes.

However, Pep Guardiola’s visiting side weathered that early storm and were the more dangerous after the break.

Aguero scores in 300th game as City roar back to form

Cardiff (UK), Sept. 22, 2018 (Reuters/NAN) Sergio Aguero marked his 300th appearance for Manchester City with a familiar landmark goal to set the resurgent Premier League champions on their way to a magnificent 5-0 win at Cardiff City on Saturday.

Aguero helped City rebound in emphatic fashion after their worst performance of the season in the home Champions League defeat by Lyon.

A typical sharp, close-range finish from Bernardo Silva’s pass saw him notch his 205th goal for the club.

Aguero’s close-range strike just after the half-hour opened the floodgates with Silva heading home three minutes later and Ilkay Gundogan firing home a glorious third before the break to guarantee Cardiff’s winless league start continued.

City, then able to stroll as they extended their unbeaten league run to 12 matches, celebrated further when record signing Riyad Mahrez joined the party with two superb second-half goals. (Reuters/NAN)

Manchester (UK), Aug. 19, 2018 (Reuters/NAN) Sergio Aguero netted his 13th hat-trick for Manchester City as the champions made light of the absence of the injured Kevin De Bruyne to thrash Huddersfield Town 6-1.

They move joint top of the Premier League.

The prolific Argentine scored on 25, 35 and 75 minutes, also hitting the post in a devastating display.

Huddersfield were the only side to stop City scoring in the league at home last season, but this time they had no answer.

Gabriel Jesus also netted, along with David Silva on his 250th league appearance for City, with the rout completed by a Terence Kongolo own goal late on.

“I am happy,” said man-of-the-match Aguero, who was about to be replaced when he scored his third.

“I was a little bit tired. I try two or three times to get the third goal,” said he.

For once, Pep Guardiola chose to pair Aguero with Jesus up front and such were the array of City attacking options that Huddersfield were simply pulled apart.

After the visitors rode their luck for 25 minutes, City keeper Ederson found Aguero with a perfect through ball and the Argentine kept his cool to finish cleverly.

Jesus was next on the scoresheet after exchanging passes with Benjamin Mendy and firing past Ben Hamer.

The defender then fumbled a cross to gift Aguero his second and City’s third in a blistering 10-minute spell before halftime.

Although Jon Stankovic pulled a goal back before the interval, there was no respite as Silva produced a perfect free kick to cap an impressive display in front of his watching wife and child.

Manchester City’s De Bruyne suffers knee injury in training

Manchester (UK), Aug. 15, 2018 (Reuters/NAN) Midfielder Kevin de Bruyne has suffered a knee injury ahead of Sunday’s English Premier League clash between Manchester City and Huddersfield Town, the Manchester club said on Wednesday.

The 27-year-old Belgium international had joined the Manchester City squad last week after helping his country progress to the 2018 FIFA World Cup semi-finals in Russia.

He came off the bench on Sunday in Manchester City’s 2-0 victory over Arsenal in their opening 2018/2019 English Premier League match.

“Kevin De Bruyne is undergoing tests on his right knee after sustaining an injury at training on Wednesday,” the club said in a statement. “The extent of the problem is not yet known.”

In 2016, De Bruyne missed 12 games after injuring his right knee during a League Cup semi-final victory over Everton.

De Bruyne scored eight goals and made 16 assists as Manchester City lifted the league title with record-breaking 100 points last season.(Reuters/NAN)

London, Aug. 12, 2018 (Reuters/NAN) Manchester City began the defence of their title with an impressive win away to an Arsenal side playing under new Spanish manager Unai Emery on Sunday.

City romped to Premier League success by 19 points last season and seem to have continued where they stopped.

Attempting to become the first team since Manchester United in 2009 to retain the title, the champions were good value with goals by Raheem Stirling and Bernardo Silva.

Sterling went past two weak challengers to put City ahead in the first quarter of an hour with his 50th league goal.

Jesus extends Manchester City stay until 2023

Manchester (UK), August 3, 2018, (Reuters/NAN) Manchester City striker, Gabriel Jesus, has signed a two-year contract extension which will keep him at the Premier League champions until 2023, the club said on Friday.

The 21-year-old Brazil international has scored 24 goals in 53 matches across all competitions since joining City in January 2017.

He helped the club win the league title and League Cup under manager Pep Guardiola last season.

“I can say that it was the best decision I’ve made in my life to come to Manchester City.

“Whilst I’m here I’m improving as a professional and as a person,” Jesus told City’s website.

“Pep had an important role in my signing, but also the club.

“City is a huge club and it is getting bigger and bigger so I just want to say thanks for everything.”

Manchester (UK), July 30, 2018 (Reuters/NAN) Manchester City forward Riyad Mahrez has been cleared to return to training this week following an ankle knock sustained in Saturday’s 3-2 win over Bayern Munich in the U.S.

Mahrez was substituted after a tough tackle by Bayern defender Chris Richards in the first half of their final pre-season clash.

The Algerian international joined the English Premier League champions on a five-year contract earlier this month.

However, Manchester City allayed fears that the former Leicester City player, who returned to Manchester with his foot in a protective boot, would miss the start of the new season.

Manchester City will take on English FA Cup winners Chelsea for the Community Shield on Sunday.

“A scan today has revealed no significant damage, and he (Mahrez) could be available for selection for this weekend’s Community Shield against Chelsea,” City said on their website here

Samara (Russia), July 5, 2018 (Reuters/NAN) With many of Manchester City’s players still competing in the later stages of the World Cup, the influence of Pep Guardiola’s English champions is being felt across the globe.

As eight teams prepare for the quarter-finals, the majority of the City team that ran away with the Premier League title by a record 19 points  are still competing in Russia.

The likes of club captain Vincent Kompany and midfield maestro Kevin de Bruyne are getting ready to face their City team mates Gabriel Jesus, Danilo and Fernandinho of Brazil.

Meanwhile, the Manchester club’s English contingent of Kyle Walker, Fabian Delph, Raheem Sterling and John Stones are all key members of Gareth Southgate’s team preparing for Sweden.

With City’s goalkeeper Ederson also in the Brazil squad, the English side have more representatives in the last eight than any other club, with 11 players still in Russia.

Paris St Germain and Barcelona, the French and Spanish champions respectively, are also well represented with six key players remaining at the World Cup.

Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich have no representatives in the quarter-finals mainly due to Germany’s early exit.

The Germans may have faired better at the tournament if City’s in-form forward Leroy Sane had been in their squad.

Despite 10 goals and 15 assists in the league for Guardiola’s team last season, Germany boss Joachim Loew left Sane at home.

Germany only scored twice as they exited in the group stage, with many commentators wondering why Sane was not selected.

It has not all been plain sailing for City’s players as Spain’s David Silva and Argentina pair Nicolas Otamendi and Sergio Aguero could not replicate their club form in Russia.

This is not the first time players from a club managed by Guardiola have made an impact at the World Cup.

In consecutive tournaments, he has been the coach of the club champions of the nation who went on to win the World Cup — Spain and Germany.

Spain’s 2010 world champions had a squad containing seven players managed by then-Barcelona coach Guardiola.

And four years ago in Brazil the Spaniard’s Bayern Munich side also had seven representatives in Germany’s World Cup-winning team.

With Guardiola among the world’s top managers and with his teams possessing enviable talent, it is perhaps no surprise that his influence has been felt at the sport’s showpiece event.

If history is to repeat itself and City’s success is replicated by the national team in the World Cup final then England fans may just have a Catalan to thank. (Reuters/NAN)
