Nasarawa Speaker says constituents’ welfare should be colleagues’ priority

Lafia, March 10, 2017(NAN) Alhaji Ibrahim Balarabe-Abdullahi, Speaker, Nasarawa State House of Assembly, has challenged his colleagues to always make their constituents’ welfare their top priority in all considerations.

The Speaker, who spoke on Friday in Lafia, at a workshop to train law makers on public hearings, said that the gains for those they represented should be the guiding principle of their contributions to debates and public hearings.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the workshop was organised by the Nasarawa Government in conjunction with Multiventures Resources Limited, Jos in Plateau.

He said that the training would help law makers to appreciate the relevance of public hearings to effective legislative proceedings and good governance.

The Theme of the workshop is: “Conducting Public Hearing as a Guide for Honourable Members”.

Balarabe-Abdullahi, who declared the two days workshop open, said that the people of the state would expect more vigorous and robust legislative proceedings after the workshop.

He urged his colleague to take the training seriously in order to contribute their quota to the development of their constituencies, the state and Nigeria.

Balarabe-Abdullahi commended Gov. Tanko Al-Makura for approving the workshop, and called for more of such avenues towards enhancing effective legislation.

“Public hearings are normally for different aims; it could be for legislative, oversight and investigative purposes. The underlining idea is to promote good governance and to provide the much needed dividend of democracy to the electorates,” he said.

Earlier, Dr. Simeon Ejembi of Multiventures Resources Limited, had said that the workshop would empower the legislators with the requisite knowledge to conduct public hearing for the benefit of the people. (NAN)

Akure, Jan. 27, 2017 (NAN) The Ondo State House of Assembly Speaker, Jumoke Akindele of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has been suspended from office over allegation of N15 million fraud.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Akindele’s suspension took place on Friday evening during an emergency Plenary at the assembly complex in Akure.

The suspension process was executed by 14 lawmakers, including five All Progressives Congress (APC) and nine PDP members.

Mr Bode Adeyelu, the Clerk and the mace were present during the session.

Akindele, member representing Okitipupa 2, was suspended for alleged fraud and not carrying along his colleagues.

She was alleged to have withdrawn N15 million from the House account without parliamentary approval.

Mr Malachi Coker, member representing Ilaje 2 constituency, was sworn in by the clerk as the acting Speaker.

Mr Olamide George (PDP-Akure North Constituency) confirmed the development to NAN on phone.

“The process has been carried out,” he said.

However, Mr Olusiji Akindiose (PDP-Ondo East Constituency) told journalists that the process was null and void.

He explained that the process would not stand because of inadequate quorum to execute such action. (NAN) AYO/MST

Umaisha (Nasarawa State), Jan. 1, 2017 (NAN) The Speaker, Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi, says he has invested more than N14 million on his constituents.

Abdullahi (APC-Umaisha/Ugya) disclosed this on Sunday in Umaisha, Umaisha Development Area, while distributing scholarship grants and two modern flying boats to members of his constituency.

He said that 50 students of tertiary institutions from his constituency would benefit from the scholarship, while the flying boats would faciltate socio-economic activities in the area.

Abdullahi assured his constituents of credible representation at the state legislature.

Besides, the lawmaker distributed six Sharon vehicles to his constituents as partial redemption of his electoral promises in order to alleviate their suffering and to better their standard of living for the overall development of the country.

“Everybody can testify what I have done so far for my constituency.

“I distributed cars, motorcycles, I sunk boreholes, I assisted the people with financial needs to improve the lives of my constituents positively.

“Today, I deem it fit to come and appreciate you again for electing me into the state legislature by distributing N2o,000 each to 50 students of my constituency under my Balarabe Education Support Programme.

“The two modern flying boats would boost water transportation and a car each to APC party officials of my Toto local government, the NURTW, youth organisations, women groups, Jama’atu Nasir Islam (JNI) and Jama’atu Izalatal Bidh’a Wa’ikamatis Sunnah (JIBWIS) of Umaisha.

“The scholarship, the flying boats and the vehicles distributed are worth N14 million as part of my commitment to empower my constituents educationally, economically, religiously and to improve their standard of living,” Abdullahi said.

He called on the people to continue to support President Muhammadu Buhari and Gov. Tanko Al-Makura to enable them deliver more dividends of democracy.

Mr Philip Shekwo, the state Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC), urged the people to use the assistance judiciously.

He commended the donor and called on other elected and appointed politicians to emulate the gesture.

Responding on behalf of other beneficiaries, Mr Murtala Usman, the APC Chairman in Toto Local Government Area, thanked the donor for his sustained empowerment programmes. (NAN)
