Nasarawa Speaker says constituents’ welfare should be colleagues’ priority

Lafia, March 10, 2017(NAN) Alhaji Ibrahim Balarabe-Abdullahi, Speaker, Nasarawa State House of Assembly, has challenged his colleagues to always make their constituents’ welfare their top priority in all considerations.
The Speaker, who spoke on Friday in Lafia, at a workshop to train law makers on public hearings, said that the gains for those they represented should be the guiding principle of their contributions to debates and public hearings.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the workshop was organised by the Nasarawa Government in conjunction with Multiventures Resources Limited, Jos in Plateau.
He said that the training would help law makers to appreciate the relevance of public hearings to effective legislative proceedings and good governance.
The Theme of the workshop is: “Conducting Public Hearing as a Guide for Honourable Members”.
Balarabe-Abdullahi, who declared the two days workshop open, said that the people of the state would expect more vigorous and robust legislative proceedings after the workshop.
He urged his colleague to take the training seriously in order to contribute their quota to the development of their constituencies, the state and Nigeria.
Balarabe-Abdullahi commended Gov. Tanko Al-Makura for approving the workshop, and called for more of such avenues towards enhancing effective legislation.
“Public hearings are normally for different aims; it could be for legislative, oversight and investigative purposes. The underlining idea is to promote good governance and to provide the much needed dividend of democracy to the electorates,” he said.
Earlier, Dr. Simeon Ejembi of Multiventures Resources Limited, had said that the workshop would empower the legislators with the requisite knowledge to conduct public hearing for the benefit of the people. (NAN)
